Gainesville-area gas prices climb to $4.55 a gallon amid nationwide surge

Drivers across north-central Florida are adjusting their habits — mapping out cheaper stations and consolidating trips — to cope with prices that many describe as straining household budgets. Some stations offered short-term discounts to draw customers, though residents expressed doubt that one-time promotions would offset sustained high prices.

Downtown businesses fight construction-era invisibility as Streatery work continues

Ongoing construction of the $4.5 million Streatery pedestrian project along Southwest First Street has made some downtown Gainesville businesses difficult to see and access, prompting owners to post signage and use social media to remind customers they remain open. Alachua County officials have also taken to social media urging residents not to let the construction discourage them from patronizing local establishments. The owner of Loosey’s Downtown acknowledged conditions are manageable for now but warned the situation could worsen.
