Gainesville reopens $1.8M City Hall Plaza with expanded gathering space

The City of Gainesville held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on May 8 to mark the reopening of the renovated City Hall Plaza, a $1.8 million project approved by the City Commission in 2023. The redesign removed two aging ponds dating to the 1960s and replaced them with expanded walkways, improved lighting, terraced seating, and ADA-accessible entrances, with the space now said to accommodate more than 2,000 people at once. A triangular inlay of rainbow-colored bricks salvaged from downtown crosswalks removed in 2025 was incorporated into the plaza’s permanent design.
