Students and staff were moved to a secure location while deputies conducted a thorough search of the grounds. Law enforcement ultimately cleared the school following the search.

A 30-year-old Gainesville man, Khalil Barnett, was sentenced to seven years in federal prison after pleading guilty to drug and firearm charges. The case stemmed from an August domestic disturbance call during which Alachua County Sheriff’s Office deputies said Barnett fled and dropped a loaded firearm and roughly 600 grams of marijuana. Federal prosecutors subsequently charged him in connection with the incident.

Bradford County Sheriff’s Office investigators believe a 13-year-old boy perished when a camper on Southwest 84th Avenue in the Sampson area caught fire Tuesday morning around 9:30 a.m. Authorities have tentatively identified the victim as Colton Austin Kuehl, though the medical examiner cannot confirm the identification or establish a cause of death due to the extent of the fire damage. The investigation remains ongoing.

A motorcycle crash on North Main Street in Gainesville left a rider with serious injuries Thursday morning, according to Gainesville Police Department officials. Southbound lanes between 16th Avenue and 23rd Avenue were shut down while crews worked to clear the scene.
