Columbia County marks 19 years since Bugaboo Fire destroyed 280,000 acres

Saturday marked the 19th anniversary of the 2007 Bugaboo Fire, which forced hundreds of Columbia County residents to evacuate and scorched more than 280,000 acres across northern Florida and Georgia, triggering a state of emergency. The blaze required over 500 emergency workers, dozens of fire trucks and bulldozers, and at least 11 helicopters before it was brought under control. Lake City Fire Chief Josh Wehinger, who helped fight the fire, noted that crews are currently working to contain two other active blazes in the region, both of which are more than 80 percent contained.
