Alachua County pushes back on state proposal to eliminate property taxes

Alachua County officials posted a series of warnings this week arguing that a state proposal backed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to phase out homestead property taxes would devastate funding for local services including emergency management, animal resources, and road maintenance. The posts drew hundreds of comments, with many residents expressing skepticism toward the county’s position. Under the proposal, Florida homeowners with primary residences valued at $250,000 or less would pay no property tax by 2028, with a legislative schedule eventually abolishing all homestead property taxes — a change that would require approval by more than 60 percent of voters.
