Florida baseball had three players and one commit selected on the first day of the 2026 MLB Draft, with freshman right-handed pitcher Liam Peterson earning a first-round pick. Peterson becomes the latest addition to a long line of first-round selections developed under head coach Kevin O’Sullivan.

A man riding a moped along N.W. 5th Avenue near the University of Florida campus was struck by a 60-foot tree brought down by Saturday afternoon storms, suffering a broken nose and arm injury before being taken to the hospital. Gainesville Police said the incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. and the road has since reopened, though cleanup crews remained on scene. The same round of severe thunderstorms also toppled trees and damaged homes in the Ocala area, though that storm’s impact falls outside Alachua County.

Alachua County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the Hidden Oaks Mobile Home Park after an adult male was discovered unresponsive in the community swimming pool. Rescue personnel transported the man to a hospital, where he remained in critical condition. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.

The Humane Society of North Central Florida is calling for more foster volunteers as its intake surges during kitten season, with more than 28 cats arriving in a single week. The shelter’s development director noted that young kittens especially benefit from home environments where they can socialize and receive round-the-clock care when needed. Roughly 80 percent of animals in the shelter’s care are already with foster families, but demand continues to outpace available volunteers as a kitten surrender program is set to bring in additional animals.
