Cyclospora parasite cases confirmed in Alachua County amid multi-state outbreak

Health officials are tracking cases of Cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite, in both Alachua and Columbia counties as part of a broader multi-state outbreak. The infection is typically spread through contaminated food and can cause stomach pain, cramping, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, with more serious outcomes possible for those with weakened immune systems. A UF Shands Hospital infectious disease specialist is urging anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention and get tested to help limit further transmission.
