Elderly woman found unresponsive in southwest Gainesville pool, hospitalized in critical condition

Alachua County Sheriff’s deputies responded Friday afternoon to a home on Southwest 79th Drive, near the Longleaf Village neighborhood, after an elderly woman was found unresponsive in a residential pool. First responders transported her to a nearby hospital in critical condition. The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident as a drowning.

State charges move forward against mother in death of 38-day-old son

The Eighth District State Attorney’s Office is proceeding with aggravated manslaughter of a child charges against Rebecca Morris, 36, following the June death of her infant son Josiah. Medical examiners determined the 38-day-old died from toxic levels of methamphetamine in his system, and Alachua County deputies gathered sufficient evidence to advance the case to criminal proceedings.

GPD warns parents ahead of planned teen takeover events at Depot Park, Skate Station

Gainesville Police Department is urging parents to discourage their children from attending advertised “teen takeover” gatherings scheduled at Depot Park on Saturday and Skate Station on Friday night. A similar event at Depot Park on July 3 resulted in five arrests and two officers injured. Police say they intend to maintain Depot Park as a safe community space while remaining open to peaceful gatherings.
