Spain wins World Cup; Gainesville fans celebrate at Las Carretas watch party

Spain claimed the 2026 World Cup title Sunday, and Gainesville soccer fans marked the occasion at a watch party held at Las Carretas, organized by TV20 and Telemundo Gainesville. The event was the fifth and final in a series of watch parties the stations hosted throughout the tournament, aimed at bringing English- and Spanish-speaking communities together. TV20 and Telemundo Gainesville have already announced plans to host similar events for the Women’s World Cup in 2028.

Tropical Depression 2 forms in Gulf, could bring rain to North Central Florida

A cluster of rotating thunderstorms in the Gulf of Mexico has been designated Tropical Depression 2, with sustained winds near 30 mph and the potential to strengthen into Tropical Storm Bertha within days. Florida’s Panhandle faces a Tropical Storm watch, with possible thunderstorms Monday and Tuesday. North Central Florida could see increased rain chances from the system’s outer bands, though forecasters expect only a few inches and do not anticipate a devastating storm.

Matheson History Museum launches campus renewal initiative to broaden access

The Matheson History Museum in Gainesville has begun a Collections Access and Campus Renewal Initiative aimed at reorganizing its archives and improving public access to its holdings. Plans include relocating the research library into the old American Legion building and moving archival materials to more accessible spaces, with the work expected to wrap up by the end of July 2026. A new exhibit examining the history of slavery is scheduled to open on August 19, accompanied by a welcome reception.

Gainesville mother-daughter duo runs free community kitchen for anyone in need

Ashlee Graves and her daughter Ambriel co-founded Have a Heart Kitchen, which provides free meals to anyone who needs them as often as weather allows each week. The kitchen operates out of a location on East University Avenue in Gainesville and accepts donations of food supplies, equipment, and money to sustain its work. Followers can track daily hours through the organization’s Facebook page.
