UF study: AI opponents in PUBG increased playtime by 50%, boosted social play

A University of Florida Warrington College of Business researcher co-authored a study finding that AI-controlled opponents added to the game PUBG: Battlegrounds in 2020 led players to spend roughly half again as much time in the game. The AI bots, tuned to be slightly weaker than average human players, also coincided with a 28% rise in team play with friends, which researchers attribute to newcomers gaining confidence from early successes. The study’s lead author argues the findings suggest AI could similarly help people build skills and confidence in workplace settings rather than replacing them.
