Gilchrist County commission eyes new site for overburdened waste transfer station

Gilchrist County commissioners are exploring a new location for their waste transfer station after the decades-old Bell facility proved unable to keep up with a population that has more than doubled since the station was built, resulting in a 248% increase in trash volume. The commission is evaluating two potential 20-acre sites and is leaning toward a property on County Road 340, with an engineer to assess whether either location is suitable. Residents turned out in large numbers at a recent commission meeting, and another public comment session is scheduled in two weeks before a final decision is made.
