Hurricane Isaias makes landfall near Destin, knocking out power across Florida and spawning tornadoes in North Central Florida

Category 2 Hurricane Isaias came ashore near Destin, leaving tens of thousands without electricity and triggering tornado watches across Alachua, Marion, Columbia, and several other North Central Florida counties, with warnings later lifted. Coastal communities including Horseshoe Beach and Steinhatchee braced for storm surge of four to six feet, while state officials activated the Emergency Operations Center to full capacity and warned that Interstate 10 could close when winds exceeded 39 miles per hour. Uber offered complimentary round-trip rides to state-approved evacuation shelters for Florida residents using a promo code, and the governor had declared a state of emergency ahead of landfall.

UF’s 103rd Homecoming Weekend fills Gainesville with parades, Gator Growl

Thousands turned out along 13th Street and University Avenue for the University of Florida’s annual homecoming parade on Friday, October 9, with floats, marching bands, and vehicles processing through campus. That evening, Gator Growl returned to the O’Connell Center featuring comedian Nikki Glaser, UF grad Laura Rutledge, and former Gator football player Brandon Spikes — with live student skits making their first appearance at the event in more than 20 years. The weekend festivities preceded Saturday’s football game against South Carolina.
