Gainesville breaks ground on $5.5M Eastside bus transfer station

City officials marked the start of construction Friday on the RTS Eastside Transfer Station on Southeast 20th Street, a 5,210-square-foot facility funded entirely by Federal Transit Administration grants. The hub will feature six bus bays under three covered canopies, a public community room, and a staff training room, connecting fixed bus routes between east and west Gainesville with on-demand transit service. The station is expected to be completed by late 2027 and is the first new RTS facility since the Butler Plaza Transfer Station opened in 2016.

UF mathematician secures $814K grant to expand AI proof-feedback tool HaLLMos

University of Florida math professor Vincent Vatter leads the development of HaLLMos, a freely available AI tool that gives students targeted feedback on mathematical proofs without handing them complete answers. An $814,000 grant from the AI for Math Fund will allow the team to extend the tool into advanced undergraduate courses including linear algebra, real analysis, and topology. Nearly 40,000 student proofs have already been submitted to the platform, which uses a set of written principles to guide responses in ways its creators say support genuine learning rather than shortcut it.

The North Central Florida Community Center, which separated from the YMCA earlier this year, must raise $100,000 for pool resurfacing and a new heater before a December 1 deadline or the pool will shut down. Center officials are in an active fundraising push to prevent the closure, which would eliminate a swimming resource that many community members depend on for exercise and social connection.
