UF freshman Hazel Krauss, 19, killed after being struck crossing University Avenue

Gainesville police say 19-year-old University of Florida student Hazel Krauss was struck and killed Saturday night while crossing West University Avenue near 23rd Street after a driver swerved to avoid another vehicle and hit her around 11:30 p.m. A registered nurse who happened to be passing by stopped and stayed with Krauss until emergency responders arrived, though Krauss later died at the hospital. Police also arrested a separate drunk driver at the scene, though that vehicle was not involved in the collision.
