A University of Florida research team is three years into a four-year study testing exercise routines and ergonomic tools designed to help nursery and landscape workers manage chronic low back pain. The project, funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, has enrolled 127 workers and 21 supervisors across 16 companies statewide, from Palm Beach to Jacksonville. Early results suggest participants experienced reduced pain-related anxiety and better physical function.

The University of Florida is moving forward with several large-scale construction and renovation projects across campus, including expansions of the Dental Science Building, the School of Music, and new student housing near Flavet Park. A historic former Infirmary building is being converted into a permanent home for the Hamilton School for Classical and Civic Education, with completion expected in fall 2027. Ongoing underground utility upgrades along Stadium Road, Buckman Drive and Fletcher Drive are causing temporary traffic restrictions while the work is underway.

A University of Florida computer science professor, Sumit Jha, has created a tool called ATLAS that detects when an AI model begins to stray from its assigned role and corrects the behavior from within the model itself, without retraining or slowing it down. The system addresses what Jha calls “role decoherence” — a problem where AI agents handling long, complex tasks gradually lose track of their original purpose as new information accumulates. The research is detailed in a co-authored paper and comes amid growing concern about AI agents acting in unintended ways.
