
A 15-year-old Gainesville High School student was taken to juvenile detention Wednesday after police say he brandished a firearm during a confrontation with another student following dismissal. The other student’s mother reported the incident to authorities, who investigated and determined the weapon was stolen. Gainesville Police Department confirmed the arrest.

A 25-year-old Mexican national who was deported in 2020 and later returned to the United States now faces federal charges in Gainesville after being arrested in Alachua County on a charge of impregnating a child. Pablo Gomez-Sarmiento’s trial is scheduled for July 22.

Rebecca Morris, 36, appeared in an Alachua County court Wednesday on a charge of aggravated manslaughter of a child following the death of her infant son Josiah last month. Medical examiners determined the 38-day-old died from toxic levels of methamphetamine in his system. The baby’s aunt, who had met Josiah only days before his death, said family members are seeking accountability.
