Alachua County School Board rejects Citizens Field purchase, seeks alternatives

The Alachua County school board voted against buying Citizens Field from the city of Gainesville, with most members citing concerns about cost, lack of public input, and the site’s brownfield contamination status. A full demolition and rebuild of the stadium — shared by Buchholz, Eastside, and Gainesville high schools — could run as high as $25 million according to district documents. The board voted 4-1 to direct staff to evaluate all remaining options, including a possible three-stadium approach, before making any further decision.

Three credit agencies warn Florida property tax amendment would strain city and county budgets

Moody’s, Fitch, and S&P Global Ratings have each released analyses concluding that a proposed Florida constitutional amendment on the November ballot would significantly reduce revenue for local governments. The amendment, if passed with 60 percent voter approval, would raise the homestead exemption to $250,000 over two years and establish a path toward full exemption. The Florida Association of Counties notes the agencies warned the change could jeopardize essential services and shift the tax burden onto commercial and non-homestead property owners.

Gators beat Louisville 5-1 at CWS, stay undefeated en route to first national title

On June 20, 2017, Florida defeated Louisville 5–1 in College World Series bracket play at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, keeping the Gators unbeaten in the tournament. The win was a critical step in Florida’s run to their first-ever baseball national championship, which they clinched on June 27 by sweeping LSU in the CWS Finals. The 2017 title made Florida one of only a handful of schools to win national championships in baseball, basketball, and football.
