UF researchers find glucosamine may speed Alzheimer’s progression

University of Florida neuroscientists have identified an association between glucosamine — a widely used over-the-counter joint pain supplement — and a greater likelihood of advancing from mild cognitive impairment to Alzheimer’s disease. The findings, published in Nature Metabolism, draw on a large retrospective review of patient records as well as brain imaging data from human specimens and mouse models. Researchers caution the results are preliminary and call for validation through a human clinical trial.
