Hatchet Creek Bridge repairs on SR-26 in Alachua County due to finish in September

A $3.6 million repair project on the Hatchet Creek Bridge along State Road 26 in Alachua County is expected to wrap up in September, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. FDOT fast-tracked the effort after the structure — already deemed structurally deficient before 2024 — sustained additional damage from multiple hurricanes, including flooding caused by Hurricane Debby. Work includes stabilization of the surrounding area near the Newnans Lake Conservation Area and drainage improvements.

Alachua County residents press officials over deteriorating roads, long repair waits

Frustrated Alachua County drivers have taken to social media to share footage of cracked pavement and potholes, demanding action from county leaders. One County Road 337 resident said she has lived with the deteriorating conditions for 23 years and was told a scheduled repair has been pushed back from 2027 to 2030. County officials acknowledge the frustration, attributing the backlog to decades of deferred maintenance.
