Florida Board of Governors delays vote on Stuart Bell as UF president

The Florida Board of Governors has postponed a planned vote to confirm Dr. Stuart Bell as University of Florida president, with the board’s chair citing concerns about whether the UF Board of Trustees has improperly delegated certain authorities to its chairman, Mori Hosseini. In response, the UF Board of Trustees will instead consider naming Bell as interim president at a meeting next week. The delay follows a letter from Board of Governors Chair Alan Levine outlining the governance dispute.

A group of University of Florida alumni — Adam Rappaport, Chuck Smith, and David Pearson — has offered more than $1 million for the property, enough to retire the city’s remaining debt on the course. The group plans to upgrade course conditions and overhaul the driving range into an entertainment and instruction facility.

City commissioners ask School Board to reconsider Citizens Field purchase amid contamination

Gainesville city commissioners voted Thursday to formally inquire whether Alachua County school leaders would still consider purchasing Citizens Field, despite known ground contamination at the site. The school board had voted earlier in the week to explore options related to rebuilding the stadium. City staff noted the contamination stems from a former dump north of the property and residual heating oil from a storage tank removed in the 1980s.

UF-developed AI tool uses MRI scans to distinguish Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s earlier

University of Florida researchers have developed a platform called NeuroPACS that applies artificial intelligence to MRI scans to help physicians more accurately differentiate between Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other forms of dementia. The technology repurposes imaging already ordered in routine care — typically used to rule out strokes or tumors — to proactively support neurological diagnosis. Researchers say the tool is aimed at improving accuracy when overlapping symptoms make early diagnosis difficult.

Gators beat Louisville 5-1 at CWS, stay undefeated en route to first national title

On June 20, 2017, Florida defeated Louisville 5–1 in College World Series bracket play at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, keeping the Gators unbeaten in the tournament. The win was a critical step in Florida’s run to their first-ever baseball national championship, which they clinched on June 27 by sweeping LSU in the CWS Finals. The 2017 title made Florida one of only a handful of schools to win national championships in baseball, basketball, and football.
